At 4pm on May 7 2009, Matt Pritchett was taken aside by the Telegraph’s then-editor, Will Lewis, and told to come up with a joke about MPs’ expenses. Lewis wouldn’t tell him much more than that about the story - which, even with hours to go before publication, was still a closely-guarded secret in the newspaper - and so Matt put together the following cartoon:
Over the next six weeks, Matt drew out the funny side of the expenses story via a series of inspired front page cartoons, covering everything from second home claims to resigning politicians - and, of course, a well-known floating “pond feature”.
